The Financial Side of Bidding

In this session, a panel of experts representing both commercial and highway construction will dissect the considerations necessary to prepare your bid.

From what your bid should include as far as different costs, to submitting your bid, this presentation will give an overview of things to take into account. This panel will be moderated by founding AWC member, LouAnne Loewen, who has worked in both sectors of the industry.

Brent Carron 
Valley Paving, Inc.

Brent is the current president of Valley Paving, Inc. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Construction management. Brent has been in the industry for 27 years, starting out shoveling sanitary manholes our grading guys would fill up, bucket by bucket with the “water” rising. He has been estimating/project managing for 22 years in the heavy highway industry. 

Brent currently sits on the Minnesota Asphalt Pavement Association board for he past 12 years, and regularly participates in the DBE collaborative. 

Justin Gabrielson 
Ames Construction

Justin is the current president of the Midwest Region of Ames Construction. Justin graduated from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a minor in Business; he is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Minnesota.

Justin joined Ames in 2003 and was named President of the Midwest Region in 2021. Over the years, he has helped deliver more than $6 billion of heavy-highway work across the United States.

Sara Hordyk Portner
Ironmark Building Co

Sara joined the Ironmark team in 2020, bringing 20 years of construction industry finance experience including budgeting, financial reporting, forecasting, cash risk management, job costing and analysis. 

As the Controller, Sara is responsible for managing all areas of the company’s financial operations. She works closely with project teams to assist them in managing their project budgets and ensuring timely payments to trade partners.

Sydney Wittmier
Mortenson

Sydney is a Project Executive at Mortenson, where she has spent the past 15 years building a wide variety of projects throughout the Twin Cities, including the rebuild of Minnehaha Academy’s Upper School, the expansion and renovation of Westminster Presbyterian Church, U.S. Bank Stadium, and the Resource Center for The Family Partnership.

She is now leading construction of Allina’s landmark Surgical and Critical Care Pavilion at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
